Sheldon Lavin joined OSI Group/Industries
The Serial Success Story of OSI Group
The next time you eat out at a restaurant, or if you ate out in the past and remarked how good the food was, chances are you may have thanked the waiter or the cook. But what about the people responsible for supplying the restaurant? It’s highly unlikely that anyone thinks of the supplier, but the truth is that they are the single most important factor for any restaurant to run smoothly. And one such supplier is OSI Industries. Also known as the OSI Group, they have been in the food, especially on the meat side of things, for over a hundred years now! That in itself is a testament to their dedication and quality.
Started in 1909 by immigrants in Chicago, it first operated as a small meat shop. In those days, the store was named Otto and Sons, after the founder, Otto Kolschowsky. It gained a reputation as quality supplier of meats and the company slowly expanded into the wholesale side of things. Things were going smoothly for years but then in the 1950’s something happened. A little-known company at the time known as McDonald’s, yes, as in McDonald’s the hamburger chain, named Otto and Sons as one of their meat suppliers. It doesn’t take a psychic to guess what happened next. McDonald’s grew in leaps and bounds and so did Otto & Sons. The company at this point was being run by Mr. Otto’s sons.
However, in the early 1970’s Sheldon Lavin joined OSI Industries and helped the brothers out in its rapid growth. In fact, he was instrumental in helping the company set up a dedicated meat factory to supply McDonald’s. By the 1980’s Lavin was instrumental in opening units in other countries such as China, Mexico, Poland, Germany, Spain, and Brazil. Along with all this growth, the company acquired several food processing companies in these countries, which is when Lavin changed the name to OSI Group. By the late 1990’s Sheldon Lavin bought the entire company from Otto’s sons and is now the CEO of OSI Group.
