Desiree Perez Does Not Need To “Step Up” Because She Is Already At The Top

Desiree Perez, Chief Operating Officer of Roc Nation, finds herself in the spotlight once again. However, she is not in the spotlight because of her accomplishments as one of the powerful executives in the music industry, but because of a statement made by the president of the Recording Academy Neil Portnow. Portnow stated that women in this industry need to “step up” if they have hopes of advancing their music career.

Desiree Perez, with other top women music executives, sent a letter to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences board of trustees. In the letter, they outlined the problems that the academy is facing as well as calling for more transparency. They continued to state that the comments made by Portnow prove that the academy is out of touch with what is going on around it.Perez is the woman behind many women and men in the industry.

One such woman is Mariah Carey who recently just stepped into the spotlight in support of the Time’s Up Movement. Also, where would Jay-Z be without Desiree Perez by his side negotiating his biggest deals? It has not been an easy ride for Perez. She has had to work very hard to get to the top in an industry where mostly men hold the power. Her success can be easily measured by her celebrity clients. Perez is actually humble, compassionate, as well as tough and these characteristics have proven to be the right combination for success.

The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund: Fighting For Justice In Arizona

Even in today’s technologically advanced, civilized world, where mankind has invented countless things to improve his quality of life and is on the path to building colonies in space, there are still millions of people that are being denied their human, civil and migrant rights every day. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey:

Fortunately, there are organizations with caring, concerned members that are committed to being advocates for the voiceless and powerless people that are being denied their basic rights. These groups work to raise awareness of the issues and challenge the violators in international courts to effect change.

There are many organizations around the world involved in the fight for migrant, civil and human rights for all people.

They include groups like The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, Amazon Watch, The Advocates for Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and Avocats Sans Frontieres. Many of these groups have been working to secure the basic human rights for all people for decades.

Amnesty International is one of the largest and best known organizations when it comes to advocating for the rights of the oppressed worldwide. This non-governmental organization has aggressively stood up for people’s rights globally since its founding in 1961 by Peter Benenson.

The group primarily works to ensure that the rights of refugees, prisoners, minority groups and migrants are observed. Amnesty International has also worked consistently to end torture and abolish the death sentence globally. The group raises money for its activities primarily from membership fees and donations. Amnesty International has done such noble work, that in 1977 it was given the Nobel peace prize.

The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund is another organization in the forefront of the fight for migrant, human and civil rights. Started by journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, co-founders of the Phoenix New Times, the organization funds groups involved in the fight for migrant and civil rights in Arizona.

The two journalists were arrested by Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County sheriff, and his staff for writing articles detailing how the organization violates the rights of migrant workers and African-Americans in Arizona and refusing to name their sources or the people that read the articles online.

The men sued for harassment, false arrest and the violation of their First Amendment right and were awarded a $3.75 million settlement. Lacey and Larkin had long written about First Amendment, social and political issues. They used the money to create the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund.

The fund provides financial and legal support for victims and activists wrongfully charged with a variety of crimes in Maricopa County and throughout Arizona. The money provided by the two award-winning journalists has been instrumental in helping people suffering injustice in Arizona to be able to afford quality legal representation and win many cases in the Arizona courts.

The work of and generosity of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin is a perfect example of the successes that are possible in the struggle for migrant, civil and human rights.

Lacey and Larkin vs. Sheriff Arpaio

Michael Lacey moved to Arizona in the late 60s to attend college. Shortly after arriving, he met Jim Larkin, a Phoenix-native. The two bonded over a paper they and some other students worked on about the ultra-conservative local media’s portrayal of campus protests.

That was their first paper, leading to the founding of Phoenix New Times. The two co-founders found their places in the company and began focusing on expansion. Lacey worked as the executive editor and Larkin took care of all the advertising aspects. Together, they built up New Times into a prominent and respected newspaper.

While it seems their lives are successfully perfect, they’ve gone through some troubling times. Their business was targeted by a vengeful sheriff and a corrupt prosecutor. While the prosecutor’s actions were minor compared to the sheriff’s, the fact that the events happened at all make the prosecutor just as horrible.

Nearly a decade ago, Lacey and Larkin were forcibly dragged from their homes and forced into unmarked SUVs. The people “arresting” them were Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s “Selective Enforcement Unit”. If the word “selective” seems shady, it is. There are a lot of things about Arpaio’s operations that shocked people to the core.

One of the most shocking things is how he arrested Lacey and Larkin. He didn’t simply send officers to their homes or places of work. He sent his feared Selective Enforcement Unit. Lacey and Larkin were forced from their homes and shoved into unmarked SUVs. Learn more about Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin:

As if that wasn’t terrifying enough, both SUVs had Mexican license plates and dark tinted windows. There was no official cause for the arrest. Arpaio, working with his corrupt prosecutor set the whole thing up out of revenge. The deputies drove Lacey and Larkin to separate jails, managed by Arpaio, where they were booked for not cooperating with authority.

While their arrest sounds more like a kidnapping, they were subjected to even more assaults once at the jails. Arpaio used grand jury subpoenas to try to force both men into giving up their fellow editors, writings, and staff members’ personal information. Arpaio even wanted the names of their readers.

Such blatant disregard for the First Amendment shocked the nation. The public outcry for their release was immediate. It was later discovered that Arpaio’s subpoenas were counterfeit, signed by the corrupt prosecutor.

The Great Achievements of Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund

Human rights are rights and freedoms entitled to everyone regardless of the area one is at or from, the race, or even the gender. Some examples include the freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of religion, right to vote and much more. The only time they get taken away is when one commits a crime and is taken to a restricted place like the jails or correction facilities.

Even the immigrants and migrants have rights protecting them from any abuse or exploitation. There are groups which have dedicated their time and resources to help human and civil rights be recognized and upheld. Such groups become even more necessary when it comes to people who cannot be able to stand for themselves.

A good example of such groups that fight for the migrant, human and civil rights is The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). ACLU advocates for the rights of every person which are mentioned in the Constitution. ACLU also acts as legal advisers when such rights are stolen from any individual, and they also look into the issue by providing legal aid. Read more; Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Michael Larcey | Crunchbase

The Union is out there to help people and see rights are given to everyone. ACLU is a combination of a public charity called ACLU Foundation, and a social welfare group called the American Civil Liberties Union. The two organizations are not entitled to any profit from the work they do.

ACLU is a union that fights for rights such as free speech, human rights, abortion, gun rights and birth control. However, the Union is not for acts such as death penalty, HIV/AIDS discrimination, and child pornography.

Another group that fights for similar rights is The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). The organization CHIRLA fights for civil and human rights. The group also defends the immigrants’ labor rights.

CHIRLA was started by the Ford Foundation to help the immigrant learn about their rights. Other groups include The National Women’s Law Center that focuses on making sure they protect the women and children. The organization also executes laws that are meant to bring safety to the women. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is another organization that protects against racial discrimination.

The last group to discuss is the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund. The group is well known for its significant contributions in fighting and defending the human, civil and migrant rights. The organization does this by supporting other groups such as the ones mentioned above to uphold the rights and freedoms to every individual.

The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund also helps defend public participation and free speech. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are the executives of the organization.

The motivational forces came from their arrests working as journalists and were even put in jail. The two sued and were given a hefty settlement of $3.75 million which they used to start the Fund group to help migrants and other people in general. The organization is famous because of their work to help others who are in need.
