Fortunately, there are organizations with caring, concerned members that are committed to being advocates for the voiceless and powerless people that are being denied their basic rights. These groups work to raise awareness of the issues and challenge the violators in international courts to effect change.
There are many organizations around the world involved in the fight for migrant, civil and human rights for all people.
They include groups like The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, Amazon Watch, The Advocates for Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and Avocats Sans Frontieres. Many of these groups have been working to secure the basic human rights for all people for decades.
Amnesty International is one of the largest and best known organizations when it comes to advocating for the rights of the oppressed worldwide. This non-governmental organization has aggressively stood up for people’s rights globally since its founding in 1961 by Peter Benenson.
The group primarily works to ensure that the rights of refugees, prisoners, minority groups and migrants are observed. Amnesty International has also worked consistently to end torture and abolish the death sentence globally. The group raises money for its activities primarily from membership fees and donations. Amnesty International has done such noble work, that in 1977 it was given the Nobel peace prize.
The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund is another organization in the forefront of the fight for migrant, human and civil rights. Started by journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, co-founders of the Phoenix New Times, the organization funds groups involved in the fight for migrant and civil rights in Arizona.
The two journalists were arrested by Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County sheriff, and his staff for writing articles detailing how the organization violates the rights of migrant workers and African-Americans in Arizona and refusing to name their sources or the people that read the articles online.
The men sued for harassment, false arrest and the violation of their First Amendment right and were awarded a $3.75 million settlement. Lacey and Larkin had long written about First Amendment, social and political issues. They used the money to create the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund.
The fund provides financial and legal support for victims and activists wrongfully charged with a variety of crimes in Maricopa County and throughout Arizona. The money provided by the two award-winning journalists has been instrumental in helping people suffering injustice in Arizona to be able to afford quality legal representation and win many cases in the Arizona courts.
The work of and generosity of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin is a perfect example of the successes that are possible in the struggle for migrant, civil and human rights.
